Screen resolution, viewport and pixel ratio
Your screen resolution is the size of your display in CSS pixels as reported by the browser. If your operating system scales the screen — very common on laptops and phones — the number of real pixels is higher: multiply by the device pixel ratio to get it. The viewport is the part of the screen your browser window actually uses, which matters when you design or test websites.
Common resolutions
- 1280 × 720 – HD (720p)
- 1920 × 1080 – Full HD (1080p), the most popular desktop size
- 2560 × 1440 – QHD (1440p), popular for gaming monitors
- 3440 × 1440 – ultrawide QHD
- 3840 × 2160 – 4K UHD

Frequently asked questions
What is screen resolution?
Screen resolution is the number of pixels a display shows, written as width × height — for example 1920 × 1080. More pixels give a sharper picture.
Why is my screen resolution smaller than my monitor's spec?
Browsers report CSS pixels. If your system scales the display (for example 150%), the reported size is divided by that scale. The ‘real pixels’ value multiplies it back.
What is the viewport?
The viewport is the visible area inside your browser window. It changes when you resize the window or rotate your phone.
What is device pixel ratio?
The device pixel ratio (DPR) is how many physical pixels make up one CSS pixel. Retina and most phone screens have a DPR of 2 or 3.
What are the most common screen resolutions?
1920 × 1080 (Full HD) is the most common desktop size, followed by 1366 × 768, 2560 × 1440 (QHD) and 3840 × 2160 (4K). Phones commonly report 390 × 844 or 412 × 915 in CSS pixels.
Does this tool send my screen data anywhere?
No. Everything is read and displayed by your browser on this page.
