How to play Spider Solitaire
Spider is the big one: 104 cards, ten columns and no foundations to dump cards into until you have built a full King-to-Ace run in one suit. One suit is a gentle introduction, two suits is the sweet spot, and four suits is the version people brag about finishing.
Rules
- 104 cards are dealt into ten columns โ the first four hold six cards, the rest hold five. Only the last card of each column starts face up.
- Build down by rank in the columns. Any card can go on a card one rank higher, whatever the suit.
- You can only pick up several cards at once when they are in the same suit and in order.
- A complete run from King down to Ace in a single suit is removed from the board automatically.
- Click the stock to deal one more card to every column โ but only when no column is empty.
- Clear all eight suited runs to win.
Tips to win more often
- Build in suit whenever you have the choice. A mixed run blocks itself and has to be taken apart later.
- Empty columns are the whole game. Keep at least one free for as long as you can โ it is your only workspace.
- Before dealing a new row from the stock, make every move you can: a new row lands on top and buries everything.
- Start with the longest columns. Unburying face-down cards early gives you far more options later.
- In 2 and 4 suits, do not be afraid to undo several moves โ Spider punishes greedy early moves more than any other solitaire.

Playing on a phone or Chromebook
The board resizes to whatever screen you are on. Drag a card with your finger, or simply tap it and it moves to the first place it legally fits. On a keyboard, N starts a new game, U undoes, H gives a hint and Space draws from the stock.

Frequently asked questions
How do I win Spider solitaire?
Build eight complete runs from King down to Ace in a single suit each. Every completed run is removed, and when all eight are gone you have won.
Which is easier, 1 suit, 2 suits or 4 suits?
One suit is by far the easiest and is a good place to learn the rhythm. Two suits is the usual choice. Four suits is the real game and most players win well under half of their deals.
Why can I not deal a new row?
Spider refuses to deal while any column is empty. Move a card into the empty column first, then the stock will deal again.
Can I move a mixed run of cards?
No. Several cards can only be picked up together when they are the same suit and in descending order. You can still move the single top card anywhere it fits.
Is Spider solitaire harder than Klondike?
Yes, considerably โ especially with four suits. There is no safe place to dump cards, so one careless move can block the board.
Does the game save my best time?
Yes, your best time is stored in your browser, and finished games are also sent to the global leaderboard on this page.
